This Act established national standards governing the marketing of certain agricultural products as organically produced products in order to assure consumers that organically produced products meet a consistent standard and to facilitate fairness within interstate commerce.
USDA control over use of the word “organic” extends to non-edible agricultural crops such as cotton and rubber trees, and further extends to non-edible products derived from livestock, such as wool.
To call any of these raw materials “organic,” each producer must meet the requirements listed in the Act and subject its facility and products to annual audit by a USDA-approved “certifying agent.”
Furthermore, for a complex finished textile product, such as a mattress, to be called “certified” organic it must be composed of a minimum of 95% third-party-certified raw materials as listed above. Then independently, the company manufacturing the mattress must also meet the requirements as listed in the Act and to subject its facility and finished products to an independent annual textile audit to standards such as GOTS, by a USDA-approved certifying agent.
Therefore, to call a mattress “organic” or to sell it as such, the company producing the mattress must earn independent organic status and be awarded an organic certificate annually in their name. This means that a mattress cannot be called “organic” simply because it is made up of one, some, or even all organic raw materials. It is the “certifying agent” that substantiates that the organic claim being made is actually true. It must be a USDA-approved certifying agent, who through an audit process can give a company legitimate claim or right to use the term “organic.”
A mattress protector is a must!
A mattress protector goes over the quilted mattress cover before you put on your sheets and other bedding. Waterproof and washable is the way to go! The goal is to keep all moisture from reaching the mattress. A mattress protector preserves your mattress, shielding it from the little accidents of life. We sweat a lot at night, so you want to make sure that you get a washable cover that will protect your mattress, reduce allergens and keep your bed fresh and clean.
Nearly all protectors we’ve seen are washable and that can help reduce allergens and keep the bed fresh. Whatever you put on top of the mattress will affect the feel, not necessarily in a “good” or “bad” way, just different. A good rule of thumb is the more you put on top of the mattress, the more it will affect the feel. The tighter the cover the firmer the mattress. The experience is subjective and everyone is different.
Mattress protectors come in different styles, e.g.: fully enclosed dust mite cover; waterproof fitted sheet style; down featherbeds; wool; simple cotton polyester pads; and many more. These are generally commodity products that try to differentiate themselves with fancy sounding titles and buzzwords, e.g.: “bamboo” [aka rayon]; natural; organic; pure; etc.
Today’s waterproof mattress covers aren’t all plasticky and crunchy like the waterproof of yesteryear. Most often waterproof mattress covers have a terrycloth top with a waterproof backing. This keeps you protected and you’d never guess it was waterproof! The slight downside to this one is that it sleeps a little warmer, but it really is the best at preventing moisture from getting to the mattress.
Some protectors that use wool or cotton batting may do a better job with temperature regulation. But, they aren’t as good at protecting against spills and other accidents:

Some memory foam mattresses that are made with petrochemicals have a reputation for powerful off-gassing, once removed from the packaging. These strong odors can cause headaches and respiratory issues if you don’t allow them to air out properly before bringing them into enclosed rooms in your home. That is not the case with 100 percent natural latex foam. It can be a problem if you are using synthetic latex or a hybrid latex mattress.

When it comes to size, all sheets are not created equal. Just as in clothing, a medium sized shirt varies widely between brands, so we are here to help you with your selection to fit your mattress.
Another important factor in considering which sheets to buy is the weave of the fabric. Most woven materials (percale, damask, sateen, twill, flannel) will bunch and shift on a latex mattress. Sheets made of a knit fabric, most often cotton jersey, are stretchy and have less of a tendency to bunch and buckle. Cotton knit jersey will offer you a snug, smooth and comfortable feel, while staying anchored under the corners of your bed. If they have a little bit of stretch in them – like lycra or spandex – even better.
One more piece to consider is the way the seams are sewn in the corners of your fitted sheets. Sheets sewn with a “mitered corner” (found in many high end sheets) will be the most limiting when it comes to fit. The miters restrict the sheets to a certain height limit because of the way they are sewn, and may be more difficult to size and adjust accurately. Straight seam corner construction, however, provides more wiggle room for tucking the sheets under your mattress and keeping the fit of your sheets smooth and taut.

The Do’s and Do not’s
- Do keep your mattress flat, Do Not store it in compressed or rolled state for shipping.
- Do keep your bedding clean. We suggest using a mattress pad or mattress protector, especially if children will be using the bed.
- Do replace the old foundation when purchasing a new mattress. An old foundation may not provide sufficient support. It may appear that your new mattress is sagging when it is really the foundation that supports the entire mattress.
- Do use appropriate frame and center support for queen and king size sets. Using the right support frame will ensure that your warranty remains in effect.
- Do spot clean as needed, and remember that the top cover panels on many mattresses are removable for washing if it’s absolutely necessary. We recommend using cold temperature setting for machine washing and air drying.
- Do not flip your mattress unless specified.
- Do not place your mattress over a heating vent.
- Do not PLACE YOUR MATTRESS NEAR OPEN FLAME OR EXPOSE TO FIRE. THIS MATTRESS IS NOT FLAME OR FIREPROOF, AND CAN IGNITE AND/OR BURN IF EXPOSED TO OPEN FLAME OR FIRE.
- Do not smoke in bed. This mattress in manufactured as required by federal law to resist, but not necessarily eliminate, ignition by smoldering cigarettes.
- Do not remove the FR barrier on your mattress, which is there due to federal laws, doing so WILL negate your warranty.
- Do not leave heating pads on your mattress unattended.
- Do not allow your mattress to get wet because some of the upholstery materials may compress. Protect it from water or other liquids.
- Do not remove the law label or tag at the end on your mattress. This label serves as a means of identification to establish your right to the limited warranty.
- Do not use dry cleaning fluid of any type on your mattress. These chemicals will damage some of the construction materials and will void the limited warranty.
Finding the right foundation or bed frame for your mattress can be just as important as the mattress itself. If you don’t have the right support for your mattress, you might be missing out on experiencing all the benefits of that mattress.
Different types of mattresses require different foundations. For example, memory foam mattresses are best supported by strong, sturdy foundations like flat platforms, slatted beds or even the floor. Other factors you’ll want to consider when choosing your bed foundation are budget, durability, ease of set-up and breakdown, warranty, and style/design (if that’s important to you).
Mattress firmness is another one of those things that’s entirely based on personal preference. However, you’ll generally want to stay away from the extremes: mattresses that are super soft or super firm. These likely won’t give you the support you need to get good sleep.
Most mattress brands will post where their mattress falls on a universal firmness scale. This is a scale from 1-10 with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. The average sleeper tends to prefer a medium-firm mattress (6-7), but factors like your weight, body type, sleeping position, and age can help determine what level of firmness you might find most comfortable.
There are many differences between latex foam and memory foam. One of the biggest is the construction process. Latex foam is constructed in a manner that it encourages air flowing toward and away from the skin – keeping your skin cooler at night. This helps you sleep better, without waking up throughout the night because you’re uncomfortably warm. Memory foam is also associated with a sinking feeling once you crawl into bed. Additionally, latex foam has natural properties that make it antimicrobial and antibacterial that are lacking in most memory foam mattresses.
There are two types of latex foam manufacturing processes that are used to create latex mattresses — Dunlop and Talalay latex.
Dunlop involves pouring foam into molds where it is vulcanized and allowed to dry. This creates a very dense layer of foam for mattresses that is often preferred by those who suffer from back pain.
The Talalay process is a more recent manufacturing process in which the foam is whipped to generate aeration, then poured into molds and vacuum suctioned. This creates a softer foam that is preferred by people who sleep on their sides. Read more about Dunlop and Talay
Normally there is no need to flip or rotate your natural latex mattress. That’s because the natural latex foam layers are made from rubber. … There is no harm in flipping or rotating the layers in your natural latex mattress if you feel it will be subjected to unusual pressure or wear.

While it’s not an exact science, it’s recommended that you change your mattress every 7 to 10 years. By this point, your mattress is probably not giving you the support or comfort that you need to get a good night’s sleep. There’s a good chance that an army of dust mites and bacteria have crept their way into your mattress over this period of time too.
It’s also possible that you’ll need a new mattress before the 7-year mark is up. If you’re not getting quality sleep, it’s not worth waiting it out.
Latex is ideal for allergy sufferers. It is naturally hypoallergenic, dust mite resistant and antimicrobial, inhibiting the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew which are contributors to asthma and pulmonary function allergies. No artificial or synthetic materials are added to provide these benefits.
Natural latex mattresses are naturally resistant to bacteria and microbes, which means they don’t need to be cleaned as often as innerspring, and even some types of memory foam mattresses. When you need to clean them, they are easy to clean and maintain.

That is a difficult question to answer, because every “chemical” mattress can be constructed differently and treated with any number of synthetic applications. The book, “Sleep Safe in a Toxic World and Toxic Bedrooms: Your Guide to a Safe Night’s Sleep”, list more than 60 different chemicals as being emitted from a memory-foam mattress and 37 chemicals emitting from a typical innerspring pillow-top mattress.
The vast majority of these chemicals are derivatives of petroleum and natural gas.
Contrary to popular belief, a king bed actually has a larger surface area than a California king bed. A California king is the same width as a queen mattress but is 4 inches longer. This mattress size offers the most length of any mattress. A king size mattress is the same length as a queen mattress, but is wider, offering more space between sleepers.
The natural latex rubber used in our mattresses is derived from the sap of the rubber tree, while memory foam is a chemically produced synthetic petroleum product. Natural latex is safer for people with chemical sensitivities, is more durable, and normally outlasts memory foam. Most people find natural latex more comfortable as memory foam does not circulate heat effectively and has a sinking feeling. The latex in our various mattresses are breathable, resilient and conforming for the best night’s sleep possible.
ILD stands for Indention Load Deflection. The ILD of natural latex can range from 20 (for the softest mattresses) and 45 for the firmest mattress choices.

The organic latex bears the GOLS stamp. GOLS stands for Global Organic Latex Standard and it certifies that the latex is organic. Getting certified is a lengthy and expensive process and that’s why it costs a little more than the natural. Our natural latex is 100% pure rubber, just like our organic, but costs a little less because it is not certified. This is an important question to ask when shopping for a latex mattress. Many manufactureres will offer “natural” when in fact their latex is blended with other materials.
The answer may surprise you. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the inside of your home is host to a bevy of toxins and pesticides brought in by both the products we buy and the things we do.
In the case of mattresses, VOC’s are emitted from the fibers, foams, adhesives, fire retardants, and other additives that are used in mattress construction. People are exposed to these gases intimately and continuously throughout the night as they are sleeping. This exposure subjects people to a variety of unanticipated health risks and reactions, especially in those who are particularly sensitive to chemical emissions. Most VOC’s have no discernable odor, color, or smell. So just because you do not smell it, it does not mean that your air is safe. Read more
